Human Performance Assessments in Cadet Populations
This study assessed potential physiological differences between the Ranger Challenge (RC) Competition team and junior year cadets in an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. The method included: RC (m = 11, f = 2) and junior year cadets (m = 7, f = 3) were assessed in the following areas: 1) quickness and agility (5-10-5 shuttle run), 2) total-body power (standing broad jump), and 3) grip strength (hand grip dynamometry) assessed. The 5-10-5 shuttle run was performed twice (opening once to the left and once to the right). The standing broad jump required that cadets stand with their toes behind a line, perform a maximum of three preparatory movements, triple extend their knees, hips, and ankles while using their upper body to propel them as far forward as possible. After the jump the distanced reached was measured from the line to the heel of the nearest foot. Hand grip dynamometry was performed once on each hand. The cadet held the dynamometer out to his or her side and squeezed it as they lowered it to their hip. The results were that there were no significant differences between groups for the 5-10-5 shuttle run (p = 0.91), standing broad jump (p = 0.49), or grip strength (p = 0.31). RC did not outperform
Lattice Determination of the Hadronic Contribution to the Muon using Dynamical Domain Wall Fermions
We present a calculation of the leading order hadronic contribution to the
anomalous magnetic moment of the muon for a dynamical simulation of 2+1 flavour
QCD using domain wall fermions. The electromagnetic 2-point function is
evaluated on the RBC-UKQCD lattice gauge configurations and this is fitted to a
continuous form motivated by models of vector dominance. We determine a robust
and reliable technique for performing this fit, allowing us to extract the most
accurate results possible from our ensembles. This combined with data at very
light quark masses produces the result a_\mu^{(2)had}=641(33)(32) x 10^{-10} at
the physical point, where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second
is an estimate of systematics, which is in agreement with previous results. We
outline various methods by which this calculation can and will be improved in
order to compete with the accuracy of alternative techniques of deducing this
quantity from experimental scattering data.Comment: 18 pages, 1
A Nonlethal Method to Examine Non-Apis Bees for Mark-Capture Research
Studies of bee movement and activities across a landscape are important for developing an understanding of their behavior and their ability to withstand environmental stress. Recent research has shown that proteins, such as egg albumin, are effective for mass-marking bees. However, current protein mass-marking techniques require sacrificing individual bees during the data collection process. A nonlethal sampling method for protein mark-capture research is sorely needed, particularly for vulnerable, sensitive, or economically valuable species. This study describes a nonlethal sampling method, in which three non-Apis bee species (Bombus bifarius Cresson [Hymenoptera: Apidae], Osmia lignaria Say [Hymenoptera: Megachilidae], and Megachile rotundata Fabricius [Hymenoptera: Megachilidae]) were tested for a unique protein marker by immersing them momentarily in saline buffer and releasing them. Results showed that an egg albumin-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was 100% effective at detecting the protein on bees that were sampled nonlethally. Furthermore, this sampling method did not have an impact on bee survivorship, suggesting that immersing bees in buffer is a reliable and valid surrogate to traditional, destructive sampling methods for mark-capture bee studies
Modeling the source of GW150914 with targeted numerical-relativity simulations
In fall of 2015, the two LIGO detectors measured the gravitational wave
signal GW150914, which originated from a pair of merging black holes. In the
final 0.2 seconds (about 8 gravitational-wave cycles) before the amplitude
reached its maximum, the observed signal swept up in amplitude and frequency,
from 35 Hz to 150 Hz. The theoretical gravitational-wave signal for merging
black holes, as predicted by general relativity, can be computed only by full
numerical relativity, because analytic approximations fail near the time of
merger. Moreover, the nearly-equal masses, moderate spins, and small number of
orbits of GW150914 are especially straightforward and efficient to simulate
with modern numerical-relativity codes. In this paper, we report the modeling
of GW150914 with numerical-relativity simulations, using black-hole masses and
spins consistent with those inferred from LIGO's measurement. In particular, we
employ two independent numerical-relativity codes that use completely different
analytical and numerical methods to model the same merging black holes and to
compute the emitted gravitational waveform; we find excellent agreement between
the waveforms produced by the two independent codes. These results demonstrate
the validity, impact, and potential of current and future studies using
rapid-response, targeted numerical-relativity simulations for better

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular events are common in people with aortic aneurysms. Arterial calcification is a recognised predictor of cardiovascular outcomes in coronary artery disease. Whether calcification within abdominal and thoracic aneurysm walls is correlated with poor cardiovascular outcomes is not known. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Calcium scores were derived from computed tomography (CT) scans of consecutive patients with either infrarenal (AAA) or descending thoracic aneurysms (TAA) using the modified Agatston score. The primary outcome was subsequent all cause mortality during follow-up. Secondary outcomes were cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. RESULTS: A total of 319 patients (123 TAA and 196 AAA; median age 77 [71-84] years, 72% male) were included with a median follow-up of 30 months. The primary outcome occurred in 120 (37.6%) patients. In the abdominal aortic aneurysm group, the calcium score was significantly related to both all cause mortality and cardiac mortality (odds ratios (OR) of 2.246 (95% CI 1.591-9.476; p < 0.001) and 1.321 (1.076-2.762; p = 0.003)) respectively. In the thoracic aneurysm group, calcium score was significantly related to all cause mortality (OR 6.444; 95% CI 2.574-6.137; p < 0.001), cardiac mortality (OR 3.456; 95% CI 1.765-4.654; p = 0.042) and cardiac morbidity (OR 2.128; 95% CI 1.973-4.342; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Aortic aneurysm calcification, in either the thoracic or the abdominal territory, is significantly associated with both higher overall and cardiovascular mortality. Calcium scoring, rapidly derived from routine CT scans, may help identify high risk patients for treatment to reduce risk
Jimmy Boyle's sentiments as revealed in the manuscripts of sketches of songs and instrumental melodies
Jimmy Boyle (1922-1971) is known as one of the pioneers in jazz and a composer of patriotic songs in Malaysia. Despite the numerous blogs, webpages and video uploads that mention Boyle, systematic research on his music has only begun recently. Hand- written manuscripts containing 79 sketches of songs and instrumental music by Jimmy Boyle were recovered in 2013, and these manuscripts have since undergone analysis. In this paper, we intend to identify the different dimensions of Boyle’s perspectives as a composer in producing these sketches. Three themes were created to group the different sentiments of Boyle based on the styles of composition observed in the sketches, namely, Boyle as a popular songwriter, Boyle as a jazzman and Boyle as an enthusiast in ethnic music. Boyle displayed a broad capacity in the way he used his music. He had the ability to compose in different sentiments, either as a social advocate, a layperson, a jazz artist or a knowledge seeker. He manoeuvres between these sentiments skillfully, shifting his centres of focus from Malay cultural nationalism to private expressions in English, to ‘authentic’ modern jazz, and to the music cultures of ‘others’
Gynecological cancers: an alternative approach to healing
Grief and hope are two conflicting emotions that a patient recently diagnosed with cancer has to master. The real challenge for gynecologic oncologists is how to reach out. Conventional wisdom states that offering patients focus and belief when combating cancer in their lives allows them to embrace hope with greater confidence, which minimizes their grief. Three pictorial models are presented: ‘4-cusp approach’ model used at the initial consultation; ‘tapestry of bereavement or landscape of grief’ model at the postsurgery consultation; and ‘Venn-diagram’ model at any time during patient management. We have applied these models in our practice and believe that they can act as a fulcrum for the patient, the family and healthcare team around which therapy should be centered., Grief and hope are two emotions that a patient faces if diagnosed with cancer. The real challenge for the doctor is how to reach out and help the patient through this process. A doctor's role may be to offer focus and belief to the patient which may allow her to embrace hope with greater confidence. This will hopefully lessen the grief. Radio Observations of the Hubble Deep Field South region: I. Survey Description and Initial Results
This paper is the first of a series describing the results of the Australia
Telescope Hubble Deep Field South (ATHDFS) radio survey. The survey was
conducted at four wavelengths - 20, 11, 6, and 3 cm, over a 4-year period, and
achieves an rms sensitivity of about 10 microJy at each wavelength. We describe
the observations and data reduction processes, and present data on radio
sources close to the centre of the HDF-S. We discuss in detail the properties
of a subset of these sources. The sources include both starburst galaxies and
galaxies powered by an active galactic nucleus, and range in redshift from 0.1
to 2.2. Some of them are characterised by unusually high radio-to-optical

National priority setting partnership using a Delphi consensus process to develop neonatal research questions suitable for practice-changing randomised trials in the UK
BACKGROUND: The provision of neonatal care is variable and commonly lacks adequate evidence base; strategic development of methodologically robust clinical trials is needed to improve outcomes and maximise research resources. Historically, neonatal research topics have been selected by researchers; prioritisation processes involving wider stakeholder groups have generally identified research themes rather than specific questions amenable to interventional trials. OBJECTIVE: To involve stakeholders including parents, healthcare professionals and researchers to identify and prioritise research questions suitable for answering in neonatal interventional trials in the UK. DESIGN: Research questions were submitted by stakeholders in population, intervention, comparison, outcome format through an online platform. Questions were reviewed by a representative steering group; duplicates and previously answered questions were removed. Eligible questions were entered into a three-round online Delphi survey for prioritisation by all stakeholder groups. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and eight respondents submitted research questions for consideration; 144 participants completed round one of the Delphi survey, 106 completed all three rounds. RESULTS: Two hundred and sixty-five research questions were submitted and after steering group review, 186 entered into the Delphi survey. The top five ranked research questions related to breast milk fortification, intact cord resuscitation, timing of surgical intervention in necrotising enterocolitis, therapeutic hypothermia for mild hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy and non-invasive respiratory support. CONCLUSIONS: We have identified and prioritised research questions suitable for practice-changing interventional trials in neonatal medicine in the UK at the present time.
